Elementary Education – How to Teach Young Children

Elementary education is so important as it provides the basics upon which all other education builds. Without these basics, children will struggle throughout their school education, causing unhappiness, stress, and perhaps behavior problems. This means that elementary school teachers need to help all their students as much as possible with these basic topics.

Elementary education is something we have all gone through, and it is something that may have shaped our lives forever. We all expand our horizons through education, starting with the elementary education program.

So how does elementary education shape a child’s life? When a child attends elementary school, the world of the child changes. Having depended on their parents from birth, suddenly they have someone else in their lives, their class teacher. This teacher holds the future of that child in their hands to some extent, because how the child reacts to that teacher, and vice versa, can influence the child, his or her ability to learn, and his or her love of learning.

When children attend kindergarten, their learning begins in earnest, with learning the basics like the alphabet and the number system, and the learning continues at a fast pace for most of the children. However, if there is a dislike between the child and his teacher, then this may result in the child not learning as well as he should.

Knowing as we do that education is a like a tower of building blocks, we know how important those first few blocks are. The rest of the education of each child is built on the first few years, and how the child handles learning and how to deal with mistakes really can affect him well into his future.

The role of teachers of the early grades is so important. There has to be plenty of encouragement with all aspects of learning, and the children have to learn that mistakes are often made by most people, but they can be corrected, and can learn from them. The very basics that are taught there need to be learned thoroughly in the first grades, so that they can be built on effectively. For instance, the value of learning to read early in life is huge, and children that struggle with this do have a harder time in school, because so much of school life is spent reading and writing.

And of course the value of knowing the number system, and being able to use numbers correctly is also of great importance, since these are used more and more as the children grow older. For children to progress, they need to understand the basics, and without this, they can become a problem in the classroom as they get bored and are unable to accomplish tasks set for them.

This makes the job of the elementary school teacher extremely important, and that in turn means that the training of these teachers has to be thorough, giving student teachers the skills they need to cope with the ever changing classroom dynamics. At one time, the life of a teacher was easier, in that all the children in a class spoke the same language, but nowadays, any one classroom can have children who speak a different language at home, so not only are they having to learn to read and write in the elementary classroom, but they also have to learn another language, one that is not necessarily used at home.

For English as a second language students, the teacher has to be able to encourage their use of English at school, and somehow, find the time to give them individual attention. For children struggling with any of the basics, the classroom teacher needs to spend extra time to help these children understand the topics as much as possible.

The result of all of this is that the elementary teachers have a great deal of responsibility for getting their class successfully through the necessary curriculum, so that the following year, the next teacher can do the same, building on the knowledge of the previous year. Should any child fall behind, through sickness, or any other reason, then every effort has to be made by the teacher to help that child catch up and understand the lessons that have been missed.

But the life of an elementary school teacher is not all about imparting knowledge. Elementary education also involves helping children become good citizens, which requires the elementary school teacher to spend time helping students with this important aspect of education. This means that the elementary teacher has a great deal of responsibility, an enormous task, and a task that is not always appreciated by others who consider the life of a teacher to be a very easy job. A teacher’s life can be very stressful, dealing with children from widely differing backgrounds, helping them with language difficulties, and helping the parents too understand what is happening in their child’s life at school. Of course with language difficulties, this becomes even more of a challenge for the elementary teachers.

As you can see, elementary education is full of challenges, for the school teachers as well as the students, but they are challenges that are eagerly faced by teachers and students alike.

Education: A Better World For Our Children

Education is a mark of progress. Together with some rich nations around the world, each developing country strives to collaborate and invest on education, the simple way of creating a good and motivated workforce. An educated society is an investment of citizenship.

This new year 2011, the teaching habit of “I Share” revolves in various communities, as everyone: rich and poor alike, work hand in hand toward educating the young; and the future generation.

Fidelino “Daddy” Benzon (serving Paranaque City, ex-councilor, an advocate for educating the poor) tells about how anyone of us can help children and/or youth be sent to school through various projects. One of them is the “Send a Poor Child to School,” that is a project of the Rotary Club of Paranaque East. The project intends to provide basic education to poor and deserving children by way of extending financial assistance or subsidy to cover school expenses, other than tuition fees.

“Education is the road to a better world for our children,” D. Benzon says. “I am reminded of our persevering laundry woman of many years, who was hell-bent on sending her eldest daughter to a nursing school. She borrowed a sum of money to buy a piglet for fattening. Every morning, before reporting to work, she would collect slops as food for her piglet from neighboring subdivisions. The money that will be derived from the sale of the pig was meant to be used for the college education for her daughter.”

The Department of Education now and in the past, believes that poverty can be fought by building the capacity of students, and the curriculum of going back to the basics of reading, writing, arithmetic, values formation and more.

P-Noy’s stronger planks were educational reforms. Also, former Senator R. Roco (may God rest his soul, another advocate for good education), asserts that each person can learn and share with all the equal opportunity to continue learning and reap the benefits of education. This makes education to be a public and private partnership.

According to F. Benzon, “The Rotarian’s vision of individually or collectively doing their utmost to send some of these poor children to school,” upholds the Rotary’s (Paranaque East) objective to alleviate poverty; hence, increase the rate of literacy, as well, as assist in the manpower development in the community.

At present, there are 26 grantees from three public schools namely, Moonwalk National High School, Dr. Arcadio Santos National High School, and Sun Valley Elementary Schools, among others. The levels of grantees are in the third and fourth year high schools, and the fifth and sixth grades. This program was started during the school year 2010-2011 and is the flagship project of RCPE (Rotary Club of Paranaque East).

“Of course, education has always been a top priority of every Filipino. Most parents sacrifice a lot in order to provide good education for their children. Let us provide a better world for our children,” D. Benzon closes.

The Rotary Club of Paranaque East (R.I. District 3830) Officers are Beda L. Melgar is president, Ramel R. De Mesa is vice president (internal), Fidelino G. Benzon is vice president (external), and Larry N. Carino is secretary, among others.

Stock Broker – Education From the Website

Search your broker’s website and you are most likely to find that it has an education tab. Click on this tab on the website of your broker and you will come across articles that will educate you on the various financial terms used in the markets and also about the associated topics. Go through these articles and you will soon be in a position to interpret the trade lingo, technical words and their explanations, charts showing the performance of stocks over a period of time, the latest news in national and international markets and so on.

All these tools are meant to enlighten and empower you to do your own research and make informed decisions. Even if the recommendations of your stock broker are based on rock solid experience, your own research would further confirm the correctness of your broker’s recommendations which will boost your own confidence in charting your own course and taking informed and independent decisions.

No body can succeed in any business unless one delves deep into its intricacies. So once you decide to jump into the stock trading wagon, you must start your own study and research in stock market trading. The website of your broker and other sites on the internet contain stock market research tools such as, symbol finder, quotes, charts, latest news flashes, articles, tutorials and much more.

Charts

Charts, for example, are very helpful tools that every successful investor needs to study. They show the graphical trends of the stock you want to trade. The charts are updated continuously on a daily basis to inform the investors what the stock market holds in store for them.

The most widely used charts in stock markets are OHLC charts, which show the Open, High, Low and Close positions of a stock of a particular company or the entire market. These charts are further classified into two types-the plain vanilla and the candlestick charts. These charts are set within a time frame, which can be months, days, hours or even minutes. They show the high and low values, the opening and closing prices and the trading volume of the stock within a given period.

News Flashes

The news flashes show the latest developments in the stock market world. They provide news related to companies and important decisions taken by their managements, which in turn may have strong bearing on the value of their stocks. You may come across news about the new listings on major stock exchanges. It goes without saying that such news flashes will help you decide on the more valuable stocks for investment.

For example, the news about the commencement of operations of NASDAQ ETF market from October first 2007 may induce an investor to plan investing in exchange traded funds at NASDAQ. NASDAQ ETF Market, the newsflash informs, is ‘an important development in the evolution of the ETF family of products… It underscores NASDAQ’s commitment to ETFs and those who invest in them’. Once you get to see this news item, you may try to find out the individual stocks that have been listed in this category.

You should analyze the performance of each stock by studying its financial reports. For this you can read the comments of the financial analysts and experts in various news media. You can study the charts showing the performance of the stock you select. Your own research may, thus, give you the advantages of investing as an ‘early bird’ which would mean that you can buy the stock at its initial price. So by the time it becomes popular and before the other investors realize its importance, its price may have risen and you could find yourself in a position to make good profits. In fact by doing your own research, you learn valuable tips and tricks of the trade that experts loathe to divulge. The deeper you go into the ocean, as the saying goes, the more precious gems you find.

For example, your own research may help you find penny stocks, which yield high returns over shorter span of time. There may be low valued stocks of upcoming and promising companies whose strong and strategic performance may bring in huge profits.

All said, it is important that you go through your stock broker’s website and be educated about the various aspects of trading in stocks.

Teaching Over Technology – How to Talk to Your Digitally-Distracted

Teaching Over Technology – How to Talk to Your Digitally-Distracted Student

Word Association is a fun game. Player #1 says a word – banana, for example – and Player #2 says the very first word that comes to mind – split – and so on. If I were to start this game with any given parent or teacher, it would very likely go something like this:

Me: Black…Parent/Teacher:…Berry!Me: Face…P/T:…Book!

And so on. Years ago, the word “black” would most likely have triggered words like “white” and “board,” but today the more likely association is “berry,” referring to one of the leading brands of do-it-all devices making their way into the hands of people all over the world. Here in the United States, some of those people are school-aged children and teenagers, members of a generation born well into the computer age. Consequently, both teachers and parents are finding it increasingly difficult to fight – let alone win – the battle for kids’ attention against an opponent that is constantly growing, improving, and becoming easier to access: technology. As students gain better knowledge of – and easier access to – devices such as MP3 players and smart phones, they focus more on their digital activity than on their schoolwork, whether at home or in the classroom.

Often referenced since its publication earlier this year, a study conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that “heavy media use [among youths aged 8 to 18 years] is associated with several negatives, including behavior problems and lower grades…confirm[ing] the fears of many parents whose children are constantly tethered to media devices.”

Unfortunately, the prevalence of these devices in our society is growing by the day, and the younger generation is gaining the upper hand as they enter into adulthood, thanks to a familiarity with modern technology gained far earlier in life than is the case for their predecessors. Nonetheless, many (if not most) adults use some type of media device on a regular basis, and of these adults, it’s the parents of very young children who seem to be the cause for concern – at least for child development experts.

Fear not, parents and teachers! While technology is inevitably reaching more and more children each day, your ability to help these children, these students, is as strong as ever. In fact, there is no need to think of your effort as a fight, and no need to think of technology as an opponent. Remember, you have the advantage of knowing how society was able to function without smart phones, MP3 players, and laptops, as well as how society is able to function with them. This frame of reference gives you the ability to teach your kids what you already know: As much as society grows and changes in order to better itself and preserve its existence, there are certain things that remain the same over time, like the foundations of a well-rounded education.

Consider using educational games and learning aids to help you get started – work on them with your kids at home, or your students in school. Did you know that you can use the newspaper to teach reading skills? Brush up on current events while spending valuable and productive time with your child. It’s simple, effective, and beneficial for everyone. Why stop there? By teaching children to think critically about the commercials they see on television, along with other types of advertising, you’ll help them develop the media literacy that will, in turn, help them develop into better-functioning adults.

Finally, remember that in order to reach students on this level, you must lead by example. More often than not, “do as I say, not as I do” proves to be an ineffective approach to both teaching and parenting, which in this case means one thing: Put down the BlackBerry!

Preschool Education In USA – Emerging Trends And Implications For

Preschool Education In USA – Emerging Trends And Implications For Future

Early childcare and education is now universally regarded as an important component of basic education. The World Conference on Education for All held in March 1990 at Jomtien, Thailand promoted the idea that “Learning begins at birth”. According to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNICEF, proper early childhood programs can produce more agile minds, better school attendance, lower repetition and dropout rates and stronger academic skills. And at a time, when most parents are increasingly finding it difficult to spend adequate time with their children in USA, playschools or preschools in USA, by providing early childhood care and education, have come to play a very significant role in the proper development of skills and ethics of the future American citizens. Therefore, it is very important to take stock of the emerging trends in the preschool education of USA and analyze the implications they bear for the future.

Preschool Education in USA:

United States of America has a federal structure and education is primarily a State and local responsibility. This is reflected well in the expenditure pattern on America’s education. While the local communities, private organizations and State agencies contribute more than ninety percent of education budget; federal expenditure generally remains below ten percent. States and communities, as well as public and private organizations of all kinds are involved in establishing schools and colleges, develop curricula, and determine requirements for enrollment in educational institutes of USA.

Emerging trends in Preschool education of USA: While, by allowing private players to provide elementary education, a healthy competition is sought to be promoted among the playschools in USA, the government is also taking some measures to make preschool education available for all. In order to make early childhood education and care available for the disadvantaged section of American society, the U.S department of education sets aside the Title-I grants. Moreover, the Early Reading First program, established in the No Child Left Behind Act, provides competitive grants to school districts and pre-school programs, such as Head Start centers. The grants fund the development of model programs to support the school readiness of preschool-aged children, particularly those from low-income families. In order to make the children with disabilities succeed in their life, the Special Education Preschool Grants and State Grants program are constituted. They would provide formula grants to states to make quality preschool education in USA available for the 3- to 5-year-old children with disabilities. Thus, while several preschools in USA are making profit by taking care of the young children, some measures are also being taken to make quality early child care available to the marginalized sections of the society as the Bush administration has promoted the “Good Start, Grow Smart” policy when it comes to preschool education in USA. However, all is not hunky-dory when we look at the state of preschool education in USA and despite all the efforts to provide quality preschool education to all, preschool fees in several parts of USA have gone sky high. According to the Forbes magazine, the admission fee in some of the preschools has crossed $30,000. The admission fee in New York’s Ethical Culture Fieldstone School has gone up to $ 30, 440. Another preschool in New York, bank Street charges $ 27, 450 and the Center for Early Education in Los Angels charges $ 15, 400. This rising admission cost of preschools in USA paints a picture of preschool education in USA that is in sharp contrast to the European model where most countries prefer to provide state sponsored free quality preschool education.

Conclusion:

While competition among the preschools to provide best facilities and education cannot be dubbed as bad, a check on the rising cost of preschool education in some of the preschools in USA would definitely help driving away feelings of alienation from the various sections of American population and help in producing quality human capital for the nation.

Elementary Education Training

If the field of teaching is intriguing to you, then elementary education training is an appropriate place to start. Students who plan to teach in elementary or secondary schools should become familiar with individual state requirements to determine which elementary education program will be the best fit.

While all states require a Bachelor Degree (BA) to teach in the public sector, some vocational schools offer transfer programs whereby an Associate Degree (AA) may be attained prior to earning additional credit hours at a college or university.

Common curriculums provided in elementary education training may include various levels of English Composition, Education, Communication, Introduction to Education for Children with Special Needs, Classroom Instruction, Educational Psychology, and Child Growth and Development. Other courses in an elementary education training program may include Mathematics, History, Science, Physical Education, and more.

Public school teachers are required to be licensed in all 50 states, and licensure is most often granted by individual State Boards of Education upon completion of an approved education training program. Those who wish to teach in the private sector may not always be required to have a Bachelor’s Degree. In this case, students may attain elementary education training via a vocational school and present an Associate’s Degree to gain a private school teaching position.

If you are serious about a career in teaching, requirements can go well beyond the education obtained in a traditional or vocational school; many educational boards encourage and/or require professional certification. In particular, there is currently a National Certification program (sponsored by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards) that allows teachers to transfer licenses from one state to another.

Typically, students who have successfully completed elementary education training at a trade school, and have gone on to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree, may acquire gainful employment as teachers in preschool, kindergarten, elementary or middle schools.

Educational Technology

Educational technology is becoming more and more common in schools and this is a great thing. School officials, parents, principles and teachers all know that educational technology helps a student to learn more, learn faster and become more organized students. The limits are endless what a student can learn by successfully integrating educational technology into their studies. If they are taught in school how to use the Internet and educational technology to better their education, then they will be very prosperous in school. It’s important for teachers to incorporate educational technology into classrooms not only because of the educational benefits that come from becoming very familiar with using technology as an educational tool, but because students respond well to technology.

Children now are run more by technology than ever, their wish lists went from bikes, baseballs and basketball hoops to Nintendo’s, cell phones and laptops. Children love technology and the unlimited opportunities of entertainment it gives them, so why not add it into schools to keep kids excited and wanting to learn? Technology helps a lot to organize students, whether it be on the computer, saving documents to different folders, creating organized and clearly written essays or utilizing any of Microsoft’s programs to enhance their document skills, educational technology helps children to become more organized. Since children love technology so much and use it so frequently a nonprofit group, Netday wanted to compose a survey to all school aged kids about technology and how it would influence them in their schooling. The survey was only supposed to last one day, it was called Speak Up Day, but because of the tremendous response they extended the survey to one week.

Officials were not surprised that children love technology and would like to see more of it, they already knew that when introducing technology into the classrooms in the past, it always caught the student’s attention and got them interested. These days it requires a lot ore to be able to get students to focus and be interested in a classroom setting because of the immense amount of technological distractions that could b taking place, whether it is them texting on their cell phone, playing games on their cell phone, using handheld video game devices, listening to an iPod, or even other students doing any of these things, it causes distractions in the classroom and they don’t get everything they should be out of the lesson that is being taught. By introducing the educational technology, students will put their handheld entertainment devices away and be interested to learn and see what the new technological devices can do.

In the survey what surprised school officials and the non-profit organization, Netday, who organized the survey, was that students not only wanted more educational technology, but also were coming up with ways to earn the money for the schools being able to equip their classrooms with more technology. This was surprising to the school officials because students not only wanted the technology but that wanted to help raise money by doing fundraisers to financially help equip their schools. This shows how important technology is to our students and children, we need to start giving them incentives to raise money for technology and help the schools to become more technologically equipped.

Why Improving Reading Comprehension Is Critical – Frightening Educational Statistics

Why Improving Reading Comprehension Is Critical – Frightening Educational Statistics

The educational statistics in the United States are frightening. Most worst than most people imagine in their worst case scenario. If we are to improve these numbers improving reading comprehension will play a critical role. As unpleasant as the following statistics might appear, you need to know these facts so you don’t become the next dismal statistic.

Did you know that 40% of all high school students fail to graduate? This is the national average. In many areas the statistics are much worst. In New York City, there were many high schools that had 1-2% of their students graduating. Although these schools were shut down, these are still very disturbing numbers. Unfortunately, it gets much worst.

Let’s look at the 60% of high school students who do not drop out. Did you know that 28% of high school seniors can’t read? The national reading test that the government proudly touts, is in fact an 8th grade reading exam. That right-an 8th grade reading exam. In order to graduate the 12th grade in the United States you need to be able to read at the 8th grade level. Yet 28% of the seniors can even do this!!! Poor reading comprehension skills account for much of this failure.

If you thought reading statistics were bad, wait till you look at the math statistics. They are even worst! Did you know that 38% of high school seniors can’t count? That is correct. Even worst, I am not talking about algebra, geometry, or calculus. I am referring to decimals, fractions, and percentages. Isn’t it frightening that 38% of our seniors do not have these elementary math skills? When you consider that in Europe students in the 7th grade are learning Calculus are you still surprised that we are losing jobs? Right now the United States has the lowest science and math scores in the industrialized world. Since science and math drive technology, and technology drives the economy, can you now see why our economic problems are directly linked to these statistics? Yes these are terrible statistics, but it gets even worst in college.

Did you know that 50% of students in four year colleges fail to graduate? Did you know that the average four year college student who does graduate now takes on average six years to complete their studies? And the Federal Education Department is projecting it will take an average four year college student eight years to complete their studies in another three years from now. Many of these drop outs left college because of the difficulties they experienced with college level reading comprehension.

Finally, did you know that 70% of students in two year colleges fail to graduate? That’s right only 30% of two year college students actually graduate. If you were a parent and you thought getting your student into college was a challenge, then guess what? You were wrong. Getting your student a diploma is far more challenging. If you are student and you thought getting into college was the real challenge. Then you were wrong too!

One thing is clear. If we are ever going to get back to being a successful nation these statistics must change. Teaching our students how comprehend while reading, improve their math and writing skills will play a major role. Right now the numbers are getting worst. Our economic future is imperiled by this educational crisis. We need to start fixing these problems now, or everyone will suffer in the future. Don’t you agree?
